Department of Geography

Geography being an interdisciplinary subject plays an important role in shaping the personality of a student and preparing them for different aspects of life. Geography can primarily be defined as the study of man-environment relationships. In this sense the subject holds great importance when it comes to resource management and utilization, sustainable development, environmental conservation, waste management and other modern issues of housing and land utilization. The Department of Geography was established in the year 2016, and currently offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The Department offers a wide range of study as prescribed by Ranchi University in the field of both Physical and Human Geography including, Geomorphology, Oceanography, Climatology, Economic Geography, Resource Geography, Population Geography, Political Geography, Agricultural Geography, Hydrology, Urban Geography, Settlement Geography, Environmental Geography, Biogeography, Social Geography, Geography of India and Geography of Jharkhand. The Department also offers practical courses as per the requirement of the University syllabus dealing with Cartography and Thematic Mapping. Advanced courses like remote sensing and GIS are also included as part of our curriculum. There is adequate infrastructural support to cater to all the learning needs of the learner. The laboratory of the Department and college library provides additional support and any supplements required by the learner. Our well versed and experienced faculty looks after the academic needs of the learner and also strives to maintain good interpersonal relation and an interactive learning environment necessary for the holistic development of the learner. The faculty doesn’t promote rote learning of facts but rather focuses on developing skills within learner so that they are able to apply their theoretical knowledge in real the life experience. With the adoption of the New Education Policy (2020) it has been the attempt to develop such a temperament within the learner which would help them put their knowledge to functional use, to understand the environmental consequences of their actions, so as to develop sensitivity toward the environment.


Programmes:

  • The Department offers full time courses in B.A. (Geography) and M.A. (Geography).
  • The four-year undergraduate programme in Geography is divided into eight semesters. It provides a wide range of ideas and concepts about Agriculture Geography, Settlement Geography, Tourism Geography, Hydrology and water Resources, Regional Planning and Development, Environmental Geography, Soil Geography, Urban Geography and Remote Sensing and GIS/GPS.
  • The department also runs a two year MA programme in Geography. It consists of exploring the Geomorphology, Climatology, Oceanography, Biogeography, and Environmental Geography.
