Department of English

One of the premier departments of the college, the Department of English has its focus on teaching both English Literature and Language at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. Established in 2016, right from the day of inception of the college, the Department is still in its formative years, interestingly poised between the older tradition of teaching British literature and the modern-day focus on teaching literatures from across the world. The Department began offering Postgraduate courses in English in 2023. The Department offers a broad spectrum of innovative courses on literature and language designed and syllabised by the Ranchi University under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). Incorporating the traditional approach of exposing students to the chronological study of the history of English Literature, the characteristic features of each literary period and the various genres and sub-genres of literature, with the political readings of literature of the present day, the University syllabus enables the students to appreciate texts both aesthetically and socio-politically to understand the principles of both literary and cultural studies. Classroom teaching is done through close textual analysis, often supplemented by high-end audio-visual aids and techniques. Apart from traditional teachings there are also tutorial sessions and informal discussion groups allowing the space for the faculty and students to interact at a more personal level. Assessment is done through continual evaluation, frequent class tests, mid-Semester examinations, term paper presentation and topic-based project report submission. The students also partake a vibrant cultural life in the college participating in debates, quizzes, drama, cine club, educational excursion and field trips.

The Department is a close academic community of teacher-scholars focusing both on teaching and research. The faculty members are specialised in the areas of Environmental Humanities, Medical Humanities, Digital Humanities, Victorian Studies, Postcolonial Studies, Cultural Studies, Indigenous Studies, Postmodern Studies, Film Studies, Communication Studies and Socio-Linguistics.
