National Cadet Corps (NCC)

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is the Indian military cadet corps with its head Quarters at New Delhi. The NCC in India is a voluntary organization which recruits cadets from high schools, colleges and Universities all over India. The Cadets are given basic military training in small arms and parades.

It focuses on the development of the cadet at the physical, mental, social and intellectual levels. It inculcates the qualities of courage, fellow- feeling, discipline, leadership and a secular perspective. It also instills a spirit of selfless service, sportsmanship and untiring dedication to duty.

St. Xavier's College, Simdega has presently a functional NCC unit, which organizes many camps throughout the year in which the youth are trained professionally by experts from the Army, Navy and Air wing. Cadets are awarded with ‘B’ and ‘C’ certificates which enable them to obtain 5-10% advantage in securing employment with the Armed forces, Para military and Police. In addition, NCC also provides various kinds of scholarships, camps in adventure sports including parasailing, firing, paragliding, hot air balloon rides, rock climbing and mountaining every year. Besides, it also holds National Integration camp (NIC), Basic leadership camp (BLC) and Annual Training Camp (ATC).

"I do hereby solemnly promise that I will serve my motherland most truly and loyally and that, I will abide by the rules and regulations of the National Cadet Crops. Further under the command and control of my commanding officer I will participate in every camp most sincerely and wholeheartedly".

Objectives of NCC

  • To develop character, discipline, comradeship, secular outlook, ideals of selfless services and adventure spirits amongst large numbers of young citizens.
  • To create a pool of trained, organized and motivated youth with various leadership qualities in every walk of their life and serve the Nation irrespective of the career they choose.
  • To fulfill the requirements expected in the latest socio-economic scenario in India.
  • To provide a sound environment conducive towards motivating large numbers of young people of India to join armed forces.
  • Teach positive thinking and attitude to the youth.
  • Become a main source of national integration by making NCC as one of the greatest and strong united forces of our nation irrespective of any caste, creed, religion or region.
  • Mould the youth of the entire country into a united secular and disciplined citizen of the nation.
  • Provide an ideal platform for the youth to showcase their ability in nation building.
  • Instill the spirit of secularism and united India by organizing national integration camps all over the country.


Benefits of NCC

  1. In every regular course of Indian Military Academy (IMA), 32 vacancies are reserved for the ‘C’ certified NCC cadets.
  2. The cadets with ‘C’ certificate are exempted from the CDS examination conducted by the UPSC.
  3. NCC ‘C’ certification offers you 10-15 bonus marks in paramilitary forces recruitment i.e. BSF, CISF, CRPF, SSB, ITBP etc.
  4. If you have NCC ‘C’ certificate then your written exam will be waived off for the post of soldier GD.
  5. NCC cadets have a lot academic incentives.
  6. Other than just military training the cadets also learn several other valuable qualities such as selflessness, honesty, discipline, hard work and ways to build confidence, and gain leadership qualities leading to overall personality development.


NCC: Basic Training

  1. Drill: Cadets must be made to understand the aim and purpose of teaching drill, so that they are suitably motivated and do not take it as "fatigue". Emphasis will be laid on correct bearing, marching, saluting and arms drill. Inter-squad competitions may be organized to create interest.
  2. Weapon Training: Cadets generally take keen interest in wpn trg and firing. Units must liaise with nearby Service and Para-Military Units to ensure that all cdts get an opportunity to fire their authorized amn. Use of firing simulators may be made to optimize trg efforts where possible.
  3. Adventure Training: Adventure activities have been incorporated in NCC training with the aim of inculcating and strengthening leadership traits amongst the cadets. These activities in NCC can be broadly divided into the following:
  • Land based: Mountaineering,Rock Climbing,Trekking.
  • Water based: Sailing Expedition,White Water Rafting,Scuba Diving,River Crossing.
  • Air based: Parasailing
